Earthly Paradise, 1891
Collection of Fred and Sherry Ross

During the Victorian period, motherhood enjoyed a surge of popularity. Mother's were praised for their devotion and dedication to their children and their family. In previous periods, motherhood had been seen as unimportant but the Victorians saw the relationship of mother and child as especially important. This maternal surge in art also encouraged women to say at home an nurture the family, instead of pressing on for women's rights and respect in the world outside of the home.
